What Happened

On 5 December 1943, Lancaster DV270 of 101 Squadron, based at Ludford Magna, came down at Scallows Hall, Wold Newton, Lincolnshire. Seven crew members were killed, among them the pilot, Flying Officer Francis Edward Oliver, who was 21 years old. Also lost were Flight Officer William Reid, navigator, aged 30; Sergeant Albert Douglas Wells, flight engineer, aged 20; Sergeant John Winton Anderson, bomb aimer, aged 30; Sergeant Stanley George Burton, wireless operator, aged 20; and Sergeant Robert Stanley Bradbury, air gunner, aged 20. The fates of the remaining crew members aboard that night are not fully recorded.

Community Connection

On the 16th July 1978, a memorial to 101 Squadron was unveiled at Ludford Magna by AVM Robert 'Bob' Blucke DSO AFC. This event was funded by funds raised from veterans and over 300 people attended. This memorial marks the genesis of the 101 Squadron Association.

Remembrance

An annual commemorative service is held on first Saturday of September.
