What Happened

Lancaster ND415 departed RAF Coningsby on a pre-D-Day operation, part of 97 Squadron's intensive programme of missions in the weeks before the Normandy landings. On 23 May 1944, the aircraft came down near Revesby, Lincolnshire, a short distance from its home station. Flying Officer Wallace Bell Jardine was at the controls when the Lancaster crashed, killing all seven crew members aboard. Among those lost were R. C. W. G. Baker, R. Dawson, A. Dunae, D. O. Ellis, H. T. Gilbert, and P. Horton. A memorial to the crew stands at St Lawrence Church in Revesby and is today a registered monument in Lincolnshire's historic environment.
