What Happened

On the night of 12 January 1945, Lancaster JB125 of 5 Lancaster Finishing School departed RAF Syerston on a training flight. Returning to base, the crew encountered falling visibility, low cloud, and persistent drizzle. The aircraft flew beyond the airfield and, whilst banking, struck the ground half a mile north of the Tree Hotel at Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire. All seven on board were killed: Pilot Officer Guy Rerenui Dunlop, a New Zealander aged 28, along with Sergeant Patrick Joseph Vincent Browne, Flight Sergeant Peter John Hill, Sergeant Albert John Evans BEM, Flight Sergeant Richard Ludgvan Staples, and Sergeant William Fordyce Cairns, who was just nineteen years old. Twin memorial stones at Hoveringham commemorate the crew alongside the men of a second Lancaster lost nearby.
