What Happened

In memory of five aircrew who perished in the crash of Wellington bomber R1028 on October 7, 1943. The aircraft, nearing Little Rissington, collided with the back garden of the Lamb Inn. Only the rear gunner, Sergeant John Smith, survived, later installing this memorial with the landlord's consent. The deceased crew members were Flight Sergeant Jack A Hazeldene (Pilot), Sergeant W. A. Jones (Navigator), Sergeant J. V. Rees (Bomb Aimer), Sergeant J. A. Johnson (Wireless Operator), and Sergeant H. Cook (Second Navigator). Their names are etched here by Sergeant Smith, ex-RAF from Vancouver, Canada, in 1988.
