What Happened
On the night of September 10-11, 1942, a Vickers Wellington Mk. IC, registration DV930, belonging to the 11 Operational Training Unit at Steeple Morden, took off from its base at 21:05 hours. Tragically, it crashed in flames into the yard of Herne Hill Farm, Chediston, at 23:45 hours, following a raid on Düsseldorf, Germany. The aircraft carried a crew of five, all of whom perished in this tragic event. This memorial stands as a tribute to their bravery and sacrifice.
